Ambasamudram, Tamil Nadu

Ambasamudram, a charming town in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, is famous for its natural beauty and greenery, thanks to the mighty Thamirabarani river that flows through it. Also known as Vilankurichi, Ambasamudram has a rich history as the home of the revered saint Agastiyar, who made immense contributions to the Tamil language many centuries ago.

We had to stop for two days during our road trip to this amazing place so we could really take our time and enjoy it. The Ambai Grand hotel was cozy and the local food made our trip even better.

The town is dotted with ancient temples and is a popular tourist spot, with the Mundanthurai-Kalakad Tiger Reserve being a major draw. Other must-see places include the Papanasam dam, Agasthiyar falls, Manimutthaar Dam & Waterfall, Karaiyar Dam, Manjolai Hills, and Vikramasingapuram.

About 50 km from Tirunelveli, the Manimuthar Dam is the largest reservoir in the district and offers a peaceful setting with beautiful gardens, perfect for picnics. Just 6 km away are the Manimuthar Falls, where the river tumbles down 25 ft into a serene pond, creating a stunning natural sight.

Visitors can explore the Papanasam Waterfall, known for its mythological significance as the Agasthiyar falls. The water is believed to have healing properties, adding to the charm of this natural wonder.

Sorimuthu Ayyanar serves as the kuladevata for numerous families residing in the region. Families who may not be familiar with their kuladevata are also encouraged to visit. Being the primary Ayyappan temple, individuals embarking on the Sabarimala pilgrimage often visit this temple to receive their mala.
